I decided to go to Whittier Park today and take in as much off-road riding as possible. I enjoyed yesterday's river riding so much I figured I would take the Seine once again up to the Park. This section of the river was much faster than yesterday's, mostly due to many sections having been cleared at some point or another for skating trails. I was a bit cautious in some sections however; the river tends to be a bit deeper along here in some places and I could hear some gurgling in a few spots. The areas under the bridges were clear of snow and I could see at least 12 inches of ice which seemed plenty strong.
A few sections of the river had trees that had fallen across them which necessitated getting off the bike (I hate that!), but overall it was fairly smooth riding. This is one type of riding where a "Fat-Bike" would shine; sure enough I saw some fat-tired tracks along much of my river route today.
As I got close to Whittier Park I decided to get off the river since it gets quite deep here (as it gets close to Red River) and I didn't want to chance things. The single-track sections near the Park are fantastic! Some fast sections, technical bits and all-round gorgeous scenery. I stopped for a few minutes at Fort Gibralter for a drink and a snack before pushing on. Although I had seen a few hikers and joggers today, there was no signs of any other cyclists other than a few tracks. At least everyone I encountered today was cheerful!
From the Park I continued South along some single-track sections near Red River. Path sections continued past the Provencher and Norwood Bridges and connected me with the Lyndale Drive areas. It was starting to feel a bit cool at this stage so I was more interested in getting back home rather than pushing too much further; needless to say I still enjoyed the rest of the ride which included the Niakwa trail system.
