I wanted to try something different this evening, so after consulting the cycling map I decided on trying out the Transcona Trail. This is a 6.7km asphalt surfaced trail that runs NE along a historic rail line (used to be part of the Grand Trunk Railway).

First of all, getting to the trail from Windsor Park is no fun at all. Most of the routes involve either very heavy traffic (with no wide lines), terrible road surfaces (ruts, potholes) and numerous rail crossings (need I say more?). At least Regent has "sharrows" on it, although they're so faded you can barely see them, and some of the cars can get fairly impatient.
I enjoyed the trail itself, although the first leg of it had so many of those bug "clouds" that I had to keep my mouth closed lest I ingest them. I also had to keep my speeds down a bit since the trail is quite well used by all types, including a lot of off-leash dog walkers.
This route would be great for commuters, or perhaps families looking for a leisurely ride (there's also some interesting stops along the way). I don't think I'll bother going up this way again given the trouble to get there unless some planned extensions are put in place.
