Rode to the Forks and Waterfront areas today to test out the studded tires and other gear. The studs were fantastic! Hardpack snow was no problem at all, and the little ice I encountered felt like it was non-existent (can't get too cocky though). Have to watch areas that have loose snow on top of ice/hardpack; hitting that at any kind of speed is like riding in the sand.
Have to figure out what I'm going to do for footwear. My current setup of poly socks, wool socks, riding shoes and shoe covers will not work at these temps and lower for anything other than a short ride. Seeing as I need at least an hour for commuting I need to find something else; will probably try a hiking boot with the covers and see how that works.
Similar problem with gloves; I had hoped the ski gloves I had would work, however they start to get cold much too soon. Will try something else...
