Low battery was affecting speed on the cycle computer. The mileage is also estimated, but close. Trip odometer read 4.85, but that was with some speeds of 0 or 4.5 MPH. I'll change the battery after this entry. Crossed 25000 on my cycle computer on this ride! |

That did the trick, but it did go to sleep between the Hammond Trail and Mad River Rd at Miller Rd in Arcata. I figure about 9 miles. So, I added those with corresponding time to the calculation. As I got to Myrtle Ave, about 8 or 9 cyclists were going in the opposite direction. I considered joining them, but decided to go to Trinidad as planned. Nice ride. Great views. Had my lunch there and returned. Discovered the Hammond bike trail along the way. Nice bike path. Glad I had my Dinotte taillight on the way back on US 101 with the sun in motorists' eyes. |

| Comments: 16.0 AP. Started the "B" ride with Carol and John-Paul. Carol dropped off early, and John-Paul had to go to a memorial service. So I rode to Flower Farm to meet up with the "A" riders. Never saw them, so went on to Performance Bicycles, Bob's Cyclery (to order orange fingered gloves), and Sharp to get a new cycle computer for Carol. It was nice to cycle the roads of Rocklin, Loomis, Granite Bay, and Roseville, again. |

There were two close ruts in the road perpendicular to my line. When I hit them, it caused me to hydroplane a bit and felt my rear tire slip out to the right. Fortunately, I corrected properly and continued. But it was close. I had already flashed on the looming crash. Wasn't pretty! |

| Comments: 30.5 AP. This was the TOUGHEST RIDE of my life. In the mountains, and over 17 miles of dirt/gravel roads. The first time that I had to use my "walking" gear, numerous times, on my hybrid. My commute tires were no match for the loose gravel. Fell off my bike once and got road rash and a "shiner on my thumb. Got lost and added an extra 6 miles as a result. Left home at 10:49 and returned at 21:46. Glad I had my lights. No cell service in the mountains, few farm houses, and nearly zero motor vehicles. Had to stop at a farm house for water refills of my two water bottles. Got warned by a driver (former mountain bike magazine writer) about the "growers" (read: pot) who don't have any respect for outsiders. This as it was getting dusk. Oh yeah, he said "the summit is 4 miles from here, then it is all downhill to Eureka." Fortunately he was right. |

So, back at the apt, I reset the wheel in the fork with the quick release. I tested it in the parking lot, and didn't hear the culprit anymore. |

| Comments: 0.5 AP. Trip to the dollar store for bread & cookies. Before the trip, I removed the front wheel, deflated it completely, reseated, and pumped back up. The thump sound was still there. Opened the brakes to see if it was a rubbing against them. Thumping was still there. So, upon return home, removed wheel and oiled the axle. Also noticed that my head tube was loose. I'm perplexed. Looked at archived blog on Odd Wheel Noise in BJ. They said to remove the rim tape and shake out any gravel or rust. Tomorrow, I'll go back to the shop and get a roll of rim tape. We'll see if that does the trick. |

| Comments: 2.0 AP. After work I went to the LBS to get rim tape. I saw in BJ archives where odd noises from wheels may come from gravel or rust bits in the hollow part of the rim. To remove, take off rim tape and shake it out of the rim holes. Well, I did that and also lubed the spokes where they criss-crossed one another to eliminate the possibility of rubbing noises. I even swapped out the tube. THE NOISE IS STILL THERE!!! I guess I'm going to have to suffer through it tomorrow on the Tour of the Unknown Coast. Fellow cyclists will probably avoid me like the plague when they hear that annoying noise. |

| Comments: 32.0 AP. Great Tour of the Unknown Coast. My cycle computer fell off my bike on a bumpy descent. Rode back about 1/2 mile to find it (St. Anthony came through once again). But, my cycle computer zeroed itself out. So, I had to reconstruct that portion. Plus, I had to reconstruct the mileage of the rest of the ride, because the wheel size went back to default, and I forgot to reset that. Good grief. The good news is that although the thumping noise in the front wheel actually got worse during the ride, during a descent on the Avenue of the Giants, I heard a "snap," and the noise disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared (just like Captain Ron at the end of the movie). Fierce northerly headwind for the return leg of the ride, I hooked up with a couple to paceline back -- thank goodness! Turns out that the guy was commissioned in the Navy from Nebraska NROTC the same year and month that I did from OU NROTC! |

They gave away many prizes: gift certificates, lights, other safety equipment, and the grand prize, a $140 flourescent yellow and reflective windbreaker. I had to leave midway through the drawings because of a 1 PM meeting I had to attend. It was fun nevertheless. |

Rode with the group of about a dozen for 4 miles until we hit the hills. I couldn't keep the pace on my heavy hybrid vs. their carbon fiber road bikes. Broke off and stopped at the Arcata Plaza, where the Farmer's Market was in progress. |

The actual start was at Red Crest along the Avenue of the Giants, but I yielded the first half of the ride to the designated driver, since I had ridden the Avenue of the Giants before. Unfortunately, immediately after I started out, my cycle computer slipped out of its harness. I found it in the shoulder, but it didn't work. The mileage and the max speed were calculated from Rick's cycle computer. The time was clock duration, minus about 25 minutes of stoppage. Before retiring for the night, I threw the cycle computer on the hotel room carpet a couple of times and then smacked it on top of the refrigerator. Miraculously, it started working again! |

| Comments: 3.5 AP. Close call on the way home. Climbing up South Whitney Road, I looked up to see two teenagers, one with a lap dog in hand, descending on their bikes toward me in the bike lane. No helmets, violating the rules of the road and coming at me in an echelon formation. After yelling "S%#t!, I hugged the white line nearest the traffic lane and yelled "You're on the wrong side!!" as they passed by. We need better safe bike riding training in our school system. |

Carol rode with us partway up 12 Bridges Road!! :-) At the summit of 12 Bridges Road just before Sierra College Blvd, I stopped with Rachel. She pointed out that I had a tear in my rear tire. Sure enough, there was a split down the middle of 2.5". So, I broke off and headed home. Safety prevailed. That tire retired a the end of the ride home. |

I got far ahead of the group, wasn't sure of the route, so I hooked up with a WAV women's rider group and rode with them to Trailhead, where I awaited the Sharp group. Saw Lisa from the Bike Hikers. I used to ride with her a lot. Lots of riders on the road today. It was so much fun. |

This morning, a guy in reflective clothing was waving at passing traffic to warn about a deer in the shoulder. Sure enough, I passed a hurt fawn about 5 yards behind him. EOM Odometer: 27876 |

Took Bald Hill Rd, Crater Hill Rd, and Chili Hill Rd and other roads to Fowler, back to Rt 193 and then via Sun City back to Rocklin. It was a great ride, even if a little chilly. Odometer total clicked to 28000 on Hwy 49 near Emporium Bicycles in Auburn. |
