Beautiful scenery. Mostly low-traffic. Some dirt roads and a few potholes in Mt., but the quiet and the scenery more than made up for it. Riv was easily up to the challange.

Comments: Ride Idaho Day 5. Hiawatha Trail. This Rails to Trails gem is barely accessible. Rode a bus for nearly an hour to get to the top of it, and well more than an hour to get back to camp. It would have been foolish indeed had I persisted in my intention to ride from camp to the trail.

Trail is pretty striking. There's a tunnel almost 9,000 feet long, several other tunnels and trestles. An amazing feat of engineering.

As a late signer-upper, the outfitter that runs the buses was reluctant to rent me a mountain bike, so I took my trusty Riv. It performed flawlessly. Grant P. would be happy.

Comments: Ride Idaho Day 6. Wallace to Chatcolet. Not the best biking of the tour -- mostly along the Trail of the Coeur d'Alene's bike path, of which we retraced a dreary 15 miles from Wed. Even so, it was perhaps the best overall day of the tour because of the high spirits of the Frederick Pedalers I rode with.

Today was over way too fast.

Comments: CWC. Flatted going up Ritchie Rd. Tire completely worn out. Should have checked it before the ride. Booting didn't work. SAG guys gave me a serviceable used tire. Took a long time to get going again, though. By that time I was the last man. No way I was going to finish before the course closed at 5:00. So I took the bail out from Sabillasville and cut the ride to 76 miles. Bought this tire just last year and it only has 2100 miles on it. Maybe it got scraped some how. Or maybe I bunged it up on the Hiawatha. Anyway, up till the flat, the ride was great -- perfect weather, nice crowd. Ran into a couple of folks I met riding to the Sheep and Wool Festival last year -- Emily Helmes (leader) and Doug Lesar.

Comments: 11th Seagull Century Metric, Lawrence stoking. Great ride. Felt strong right till the end. Pretty quick trip. Finished in about 5 hours clock time. Don't know what our average was -- speedo battery died since last year.

Looked over the tires pretty carefully earlier in the week. I couldn't see any real problems -- no cuts and no threads showing. And they did get us through the Sea Gull just fine. But they are ten years old and have been showing cracks for more than five years. So I found replacement tires on the web (some dealer in Londonderry, Northern Ireland). $75 delivered -- a pretty good deal. Ordered on Sunday, arrived on Wed, with free inner tubes included. These tires were quoted as much as $50 apiece by various web sellers. Mileage at the change was 3565.

Comments: Went out to explore the new ICC bike trail. Once I got warmed up, I enjoyed this crystal-clear morning. The ICC bike trail is a joke. It goes from nowhere to nowhere. The section I rode, starts at Needwood Road and ends at Emory Lane. I think the trial picks up again further East, but I couldn't see how from the ground.

Comments: Folder is pissoir kaput. Rode it to work this morning. After work, I rode to Winkler's to pick up the car. As I was folding it to load in the trunk I heard a crack. I didn't realize what had happened till I got home and tried to unfold it. The frame broke in two places, both near the hinges.

This was a misbegotten bike. Very heavy. Not all that easy to fold. Not very stable. Yet I logged 538.6 good miles on it. The best bike in the world is the one you're on and this one's portability made it that on enough occasions.

I bought this bike used from a fellow Potomac Pedaler, Denny Freezer, when he upgraded to a Bike Friday. Paid $75. Almost immediately, one of the cranks broke. Gordon wouldn't touch it. He was mad at DaHon for selling direct and undercutting bike shops. Larry had a crank-chainwheel the right size (60 tooth, I think) and put it on for $45. Then, in Augusta, I stripped the threads on the front axle and ended up buying an entire 16-inch kids-bike wheel. I always intended to move the axle from the cheap wheel to my nice aluminum wheel, but never got around to it. Guess it was just as well.

It's pretty fortunate that it didn't break when I was rolling. I suppose if I'd hit a hard bump while standing, it might have been a disaster. Then again, the bike wasn't stable enough for being out of the saddle very much.

Comments: Cold, cold, cold! Last night, I planned out a 30 mile trip to barely touch Frederick County. It was so cold, I ended up re-positioning the red car at work. Even those 5 miles weren't very enjoyable. 25F with gusty winds.

Comments: Spitting snow when I left the house. Blue skies when I got to work. Comedy of errors with most recent flat. I patched the tube after the last flat (a week or three ago). Botched it and was left with a slow leak. Sunk the tube and saw bubbles from under the patch. Don't think I can fix that. Swapped in the spare from the seat bag, but it went flat. Swapped in a spare I found lying around the shed and it went flat. (Now I vaguely remember swapping it out months ago and intending to patch it.) The supposedly patched tube is now actually patched and is holding air. Still need to patch the one from the seat bag (or buy a new one if it can't be patched.)
