Comments: Test ride of Raleigh hybrid with new left crank.
In April of '22 I replaced the bottom bracket. I forgot about Sheldon's dictum to re-tighten cranks a mile after installing them. It took quite a while, but eventually the left crank was ruined. Once that happens, there is nothing you can do but get a new crank. I thought I would have to replace the pair, but I found a 170 mm left crank on the web. It's not as nice looking as the ruined Sugino crank, but it will do.
When I installed the crank last summer, I felt some grittiness and figured the April '22 bracket was toast. (It sat on my shelf for 10 years before I got around to installing it.) So I got another bracket off the web. I researched it pretty carefully to get one that would fit, but it didn't. With other bike options, I could leave it in pieces. Finally, it is back together with the April '22 bottom bracket. It is fine. Grittiness was probably in the chain, which got a badly needed cleaning and some oil. And this time, I made it a point to ride a mile and re-tighten the cranks. |
