I've been car-free since April 1999. I used the bus until March 29, 2006 when bought the bike. Before that, the last time I rode was about 35 years ago on a Schwinn 3-speed with 24" tires.

I'm continually amazed that:
  1. I can ride a bike at all with a bum knee, an arrhythmia and after smoking for 35 years,
  2. I seem to be pretty good at it, and
  3. Once I'm actually outside and on the bike, riding in any kind of weather doesn't bother me at all.
It's this constant state of amazement that keeps me riding everywhere and in all conditions.

All rides are logged. Most rides are commuting or errands.

2010 Goals
  1. 5,000 miles (13.7/day)
    Challenge Goal: 5,475 (15/day)
  2. Top 10% of riders (outdoor, journaled miles only)
  3. 100% on the Commuter Cycling Century
  4. No crashes
  5. Acquire and build-up a Ti road frame (Acquired 5/30, built-up 6/19)

Road bike
Description:  My Trek Portland was a leftover 2006 model that I purchased new in September 2007. This bike is now my regular, four-season commuter and grocery-getter. It hit every one of my four-season road bike requirements:
  • Road style frame
  • Drop bars with integrated brake/shift levers
  • Room in the frame and fork for my snow tires
  • Disc brakes
  • Fender mounts
  • Rack mounts
  • Triple chainrings with 175mm cranks
  • Non-ferrous frame because steel rusts in the salt.
and as a bonus, it adds a carbon fork and full 105 with a dash of Ultegra.

The Portland is an extremely versatile bike. It does everything I've ever asked and it does so with neither complaint nor fanfare. It's a comfortable, refined ride that's happy commuting in traffic, hauling home insane amounts of groceries, carving up curvy pavement in fast group rides, smoothing out all-day century rides, or chasing MTBers off-road. It's an amazing piece of machinery.

For our second anniversary, I got it a new wheelset with a dynamo hub and a Schmidt Edelux headlight and B&M taillight. Along with the DiNottes, we own the night.

Road bike
Description:  Thank heavens I can own more than one bike, because I love Yellow Bike.

I bought the poor, forlorn thing used in January 2007 for $100. It hadn't been maintained well at all and needed an entire new drivetrain. But I was looking for a road bike and project, and it fit the bill on both counts. Beyond the drivetrain, I also replaced the brifters, tires, wheels, pedals, saddle and seatpost.

When I first threw a leg over it, it was love at first pedal stroke. It was my fair weather commuter from March to September 07. It's now my fun ride bike and backup fair weather commuter. Frisky as a puppy, Yellow Bike rewards fast riding and as a result, it always pulls just a little extra speed out of me.

After tangling with a Pontiac on 4/27/09, it was placed back in service on 7/3/09 at 3,438.5 miles with a new carbon fork, the Wound Up Road Fork with fender eyelets. This was transformative. The front end is plush as can be and the handling is now more neutral. Perhaps not as pretty as the original yellow CroMo one, but we both like it a lot.

Road bike
Description:  I've been looking for a good steel frame to build up. At Towner's, I found a whole bike for less than the cost of a new frame. It has classic geometry rendered in TIG-welded Reynolds 853 tubing

Stock, the drivetain was full Ultegra (9-speed) with a 53/39 standard double in front. Its previous owner had a case of upgraditis, so now it has a Dura-Ace RD, an Easton EC30 carbon fork, EC90 bars, Thompson seatpost and stem, and Selle Italia SLK saddle. It rolls on a pair of older Neuvation wheels.

Original spec here.

Description:  I bought this as a frameset-only from another member of my club.

For the time being it will share components with Blue Steel. This will also make it easier to compare the two framesets by eliminating the variables of components.

By next year I expect to have it built-up with its own components.

Description:  STOLEN JANUARY 2008 This bike was stolen from my locked storage bin in the basement of my apartment building. Thieves unscrewed the door hinges and took only the bike and two boxes of bike part.

Not that it does any good here, but the serial number is C16L0515

This was my first bike. For nine months and 3500 miles it was my daily commuter and grocery getter.
