History:

I first started riding a bicycle as a child, eventually "pedaling" in order to "peddle" the Sacramento Bee to my subscribers. After I received my first car, I put my bike away for some 40+ years.
When I retired as a Communications Media Professor Emeritus, I joined the Team in Training to stay fit and to make a difference in the lives of those stricken with blood cancer.
In my four years with TNT (first as a participant, then as a mentor and the next two years as an assistant coach), I've raised nearly $20,000 for Leukemia & Lymphoma research and patient treatment. I ended my involvement with TNT as a volunteer coach in 2006, due to family needs.
During my tenure with TNT I have ridden four AMBBR (America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride) centuries, four Chico Wildflower centuries, and four Party Pardee metric centuries, as well as a SBH (Sacramento Bike Hikers) century. Outside the state I've ridden El Tour de Tucson (109 miles in Arizona), STP (206 miles between Seattle and Portland) twice, and RAGBRAI (500 miles across the state of Iowa) once.
Though my cycling experience in 2007 dropped off dramatically, I have purchased a new Burley tandem (one of the last before they stopped making tandems) and expect to put on more miles with my wife, in 2008 and beyond. |

2006 Burley Zydeco
Tandem Road bike |
Description: Bought this for possible tandem when my wife, who is not a cyclist, indicated a possible interest in tandem operation. This photo was taken as we rode the pre-prologue of the 2009 Amgen Tour of California, and appeared in a photo montage in the Sacramento Bee. The state capitol is a blur as we whiz past it, as are the other riders who simply couldn't keep up with our dazzling speed.

Specialized Cross Roads Cruz
700c Hybrid bike |
Description: My first adult cycle, which I obtained several decades ago along with its female counterpart for my wife. Both bikes sat in our garage for nearly four decades until I retired and took up cycling with the Team in Training. After several months of riding it during TNT training, I opted for a more recent vehicle, The LeMond Wayzata, which is my current single bike. The Specialized is now the primary transportation for my son, Eric.

Giant Revive
Road bike |
Description: Revive may sound like a caffeine drink, but it's actually a high-tech-looking, semi-recumbent comfort bike. If you find riding a bicycle uncomfortable--on your back, rear, neck--the Revive might just be your solution. The impressive appearance is matched by a surprisingly comfortable and ergonomic rider positioning on this pedal-powered machine. The rider cockpit (seat height, lumbar support, handlebar position) is easily adjustable for a good fit. Just sit back and pedal away. You'll probably wish you had a drink holder to enjoy the ride, as it even feels somewhat like driving. An adjustable coil spring shock keeps road feedback to a minimum, and the 8-speed Shimano drivetrain provides an adequate gearing range for everything short of all-out sprints or long, steep ascents. Which brings us to the target audience: The Revive is a very fun bike, and a good way to get out and get exercise for those who, for whatever reason, don't like to ride traditional bicycles. The Revive isn't ideally suited toward high-intensity workouts or long-distance journeys. For those who think they might exercise more or get out more if they could just ride something more comfortable than a typical bicycle, it's definitely worth a test ride.
