Though I would try my luck on the Mecklenberg course with a good pair of climbs, a speed section, and a fast downhill. Started out up Old Odessa and did okay putting in a poor climb. It probably would have been a mediocre climb without all my bonus weight. Couldn't get a time check as there is now a bridge out and it comes right before my time check. Was on a pace to easily top nine but well short of a ten. Did ride up to look at the destruction before U-turning and continuing on the detour. Finished off the whole climb up SR 228 to Smith Valley. Second half of the climb was steady but faded a bit at the end. With the first seven miles of climbing behind I had six miles of rolling downgrade with a good tailwind to look forward to. It got even better as they had paved most of it with satin smooth macadam. Legs felt great and was able to sail along in the mid-twenties coming out of the saddle and charging up the short rises. Had to slow down once as there were two bucks in the middle of the road. Their antlers were still in felt but one already had a good-sized rack going. Was able to pull into Mechlenberg at over fourteen that seemed pretty good to me. The fun and speed were over though as ran out of leg on the next long climb into the wind. I was back to dismal climbing for a couple of miles of hills. Got through them though and had a good downhill to the rollers before Bennitsburg. Did the math and looked like a fifteen was out for the day. Didn't have enough miles left on the short course to make up much time. Ride back down upper Skyline was pretty good with the spectacular summer view and a cross wind. Had a good descent down Skyline but rode the brakes quite a bit as couldn't remember if I'd descended it this year and didn't want any fifty-mile an hour surprises. At least had one fair climb and some good speedwork.
