 Hill\ 10 mi ITT
With the mountain century behind me I have to start focusing on the upcoming events that will require me to develop much more speed than I now possess. Planned on starting a hopefully weekly time trial this afternoon but still wanted to keep up with my climbing. In the morning, I did the two climbs to Logan and caught a tailwind back along the lake. Started out up Skyline that begins at rather good grade. Intended to stay out of the saddle to the old reservoir access road which would leave me with about two thirds of the steep section complete. Used to do it back in the day when we used this hill in one of our monthly hill time trials. Felt I was doing well until the legs gave way and I still couldn't see the access road and thought I suck. felt better when I sat down and started to spin and found out that I was almost to the road and that I just couldn't see it in some high grass on the shoulder. Immediately felt better and finished off the climb. Worked a good headwind to Logan and had a good second climb. Coasted down to Hector and then did a few surges in the big ring on the downgrades with a blistering tailwind. Got some good speed and hoped I would be able to have good legs for the time trial effort. Had a decent time coming into Watkins but getting through it in the summer really trashes the average speed.

In the afternoon did a warmup to Watkins on the bike with the fast wheels and clip-on aerobars. I was terribly uncomfortable and knew it would take some time before I would be at ease on the bars. Also had some shifting issues and couldn't get the bike to stay on the big chainring if I got too far to the left on the rear cassette. Just need some adjustment but wouldn't be using those gears anyhow on this course since the max grade is only around five percent on a couple of short risers. Wind was still blowing out of the north so would have a good tailwind on the ascending half of the run. Didn't have a very strong start from a standing start but picked up a good speed for the first mile. Settled in a little and concentrated more on getting comfortable and being aero rather than hammering today. Put in a steady effort and got to the turnaround and had a terrible one due to traffic and trying to figure out where the actual turnaround is. It used to be at a speed zone ahead sign but that sign has been removed so had to reckon out where the new turnaround would be. Got turned around and found I had lost about a half a mile an hour off the average speed. After the turn around it was into the headwind and mostly downgrade. Ended up with a twenty-two zero average so was a little faster on the return leg. Didn't feel great at the end but thought I would do better on the next outing as staying on the bars wasn't as hard as I thougt it would be.
