Took yesterday off due to thundershowers in the morning and heavy rain in the afternoon. Probably could have gotten a short ride in early, but as I was ill for a month after the last time rode in the rain decided to not risk it. Today though was a beautiful day with full sun, cool temperatures and only a slight cooling wind. Drove to Freedom Park to start my ride and found the trails were closed due to the heavy rain. Even though the trail I use through the park is paved, I opted for the road in case there were any trail Karens wanting to have me cited for riding on closed trails. Also had some concern that the road through Cranston Mill Pond gulch might be closed due to high water. Also wasn't feeling it today and had to decide whether to do a fifty miler or one of the shorter courses. Opted for a fifty since I missed yesterday and selected one of two fifty routes I have stored on my computer. Wasn't sure which one it was as the two are similar for the first six or seven miles. Was dreading the trip through Cranston Mill but got some good speed on the downhill side and had good speed to start up the back side. Fortunately, the road was open as a detour would add several miles onto the day. Felt better once the first short but nasty climb was out of the way and started to put out some decent watts on the flatter sections. I found out that I was on the Holly Fork route instead of the Providence Forge route. It has more climbing and less fast flats. Had to do a couple miles on SR 60 heading west and found that traffic heading east was backed up for miles. Appeared that the construction on I-64 must have diverted the traffic. Had to cross the road a couple times to access a parallel secondary road and was fortunate that some friendly drivers gave me enough space to cross. Felt strong heading through the small climbs before the closed road\bridge out section. I remember the climbs being more challenging, but they were fast and easy today. Lost quite a bit off the average speed during the walking portage section but saw some storks and a racoon hanging about, and it provided a good location for a nature break. Kept a faster than normal pace on the Holly Fork Road though I did crack a bit on one of the steeper climbs. Recovered nicely though to finish off the top of the climb. Had to do nearly a mile of gravel to avoid a section of one busy road with no shoulder. The gravel was a bit soft in some sections after the rain but still ridable. Had to cross SR 60 again but traffic was no longer bumper to bumper but still heavier than what I am used to. Finished off the ride in good order without the late ride fatigue I had the last time I did the route. The cooling weather definitely helps my endurance. Didn't suffer much going through the gulch on the way back as again had good speed on the downhill but not enough to carry me up the eleven percent grade. It did get me far enough up it though that I was able to finish it off in the big chainring. Didn't have a very good overall average but felt and rode well over several sections. A good day on the bike.
