Decided to do some speed work and get the heart rate up as had lots of miles and lots of climbing but have just been grinding the miles out. Picked a local course and decided on trying to get some good speed going and keep the milage down today. Had to ride a mile or so from my motel to get to the start of the course in downtown Cheraw. Ride started poorly as the course took me down a closed road that appeared to be in the process of being torn up. Ended up going slowly over broken pavement and had to dismount to go over a sandpile placed to keep traffic off the road. Got through that zone and started getting the speed back up and the course entered the state park I had ridden in yesterday. Unfortunately, it also included the mile or so of broken pavement I rode through yesterday. Plan on doing some speed work was going poorly. Got out onto some secondary roads and things picked up. As I was riding down into a depression, I saw a car stopped in the center of the road with the passenger door open. I slowed but couldn't see anyone around the car nor any reason for it stopping. Instead of staying on the passenger side I passed on the driver side and started to climb out of the gully when someone yelled at me. I stopped and a man got out of the passenger side and tried to engage me in conversation. At first, I thought perhaps the car had broken down and they needed to call someone. That wasn't the case though and the guy just started asking me questions as 'How far did you ride?', How many miles on that bike?', 'Is that bike fast?' and finally, 'Can I ride it?'. I laughed at him and told him 'No' before getting out of Dodge. Not sure whether the guy was just jerking my chain but usually you don't stop in the middle of the road to have friendly conversations with passing cyclists. I suspect that the plan was to separate me from my bike and perhaps leave me lying in a ditch, and that the intent might have been to knock me off the bike when I passed the open passenger door. There were at least two people in the car and if they had broken down, they could have easily pushed it to the side of the road. Either way I was not terribly comfortable with the situation and rode to the nearest highway at a good clip. I was hoping that they were smart enough that they wouldn't run me down with the car as running over the bike might decrease the resale value. I made it to the highway without incident and stayed on the highway until back in Cheraw. And so ended my fast-riding day and any more riding around Cheraw.
