 Fair Winds
The weather oracles predicted a favorable wind pattern for a trip around Seneca Lake. Morning would start with a light south wind in the tapering off then shifting to a light north wind. Sun was out so couldn't come up with any excuses not to ride. Caught the predicted tailwind and used it for a steady climb out of Watkins then pushed a big gear to Glenora and headed to the back roads through Lakemont and Himrod. Planned on pushing hard for an hour then going into cruise mode. Nearing Himrod I saw riders up the road and pushed to try to catch them. Had a good run but turned out to be a couple of tourists riding at a leisurely pace. Kept some pressure on the pedals on the downgrade to Dresden and was making good time then the wind shifted to the west. Made an effort on the climb out of Dresden on SR14 as my average speed was significantly better than what I have been achieving this year though it was not even close to the twenty plus averages from the glory days. Decided to go all in and kept pushing to Geneva hoping that if I did overdo it the north wind would help me limp home. Rolled into town with an eighteen two average. I was able to hold the average on the shallow climb out on Geneva on SR96 but lost quite a bit on the climbing section as I neared Ovid and the high point at Lodi. Got most of it back on the descent into Valois. Surprisingly the legs still felt good at seventy miles and had a good climb out of Valois. Had the average back up into the low eighteens and really was hoping to be plus eighteen at the finish. Opted to add an additional climb up Tug Hollow to avoid the bumper-to-bumper tourist traffic in Watkins that could really put a hurtin on my average speed. It was still a gamble as Tug Hollow is a pretty good climb with a short steep wall just before getting into Burdett. My average dropped below eighteen, but I was able to recover it on the steep descent down Skyline to Montour. Was very pleased to have my best average in a few years though I did have some help from the weather sages.
