Ride Description: Testing the new Nokian Extreme 294 studded ice tires.
Cruising around the 'hood looking for ice to ride on. There was plenty, and the tires are amazing! I changed my gearing to 32/18. Put on the SRAM singlespeed chain and adjusted the chain tensioner. The drivetrain is much quieter now. Hmmmm, I thought I was running a 17 tooth on the rear, but it was a 16 tooth. Singletrack should be a little easier now. We'll have to wait til Spring to see what it does to my top end speed.

Ice Ice Baby...

I wanted to put on my new Nokian Extreme 294 studded tires and go ride the Long Prairie Trail but, It took me a few hours to put on a new chain, change my gearing, adjust my chain line, adjust my chain tensioner, and put air in the HeadShok and Risse shock. So I just rode around the 'hood in search of ice.
I'm glad I took the time to fine tune the bike, it's performing the way it should now.

The Tires...
Wow! These tires grip ice like Spiderman crawling up a skyscraper.
294 carbide tipped steel studs = TRACTION on ice. Every knob has a stud.

I was taking it fairly easy, (first time on ice in a long time) riding thru all types of ice, smooth, rough, rutted, compacted snow, thick and thin, I tested the traction braking, accelerating, seated and out of the saddle and the tires are amazing! I'll bet I only got them to slip or spin a handful of times, once while climbing a smooth icy hill out of the saddle, and I was able get a short controllable skid of the rear tire on some smooth ice after grabbing a handful of rear brake. It also slipped a little in some "sandy" snow areas. But I was running 45 psi of air in them. They recommend 36-60 psi.

The tires were not as slow as I thought they might feel considering the big wide spaced knobs. They actually made more noise on dry pavement. Probably not the best tire for commuting, unless you have a lot of ice in a short distance. But the traction on ice of all kinds is so good you'd swear you were riding on pavement or dirt. The traction is that good.
Still, you are on ice , so it's a good idea to not make any sudden movements or fast sharp turns.
There is a 30 mile break in period for the studs to settle properly. But from what I've read, it's not really necessary.

I bought the tires on sale for the lowest price I've seen for the Nokian Extreme 294's.
They were $70 each, add shipping costs and they're not cheap. But they are worth every penny. And since Nokian sells spare studs and a tool to install them, these tires could last a lifetime.

I would highly recommend this tire to anyone looking for the ultimate traction on ice and hard packed snow.

Haha!
No, my friend, anyone that rides over 10,000 miles a year is a stud!
Congrats on passing the 10G mark.
