Took yesterday off in another effort to recover my fitness level. Today was a travel day for a metric in State College, PA in the morning. Weather wasn't too bad as although still fairly cool for May at least the sun was out. The weatherman got the temperature right but again was one hundred and eighty degrees off on the wind. Forecast foretold of a strong north wind that would push me up the valley to Horseheads and which I would hide from by returning via Middle Road through the forested hills. Wasn't planning on heroics and just wanted to get a few stressless miles to loosen up for tomorrow's challenge. So headed off into a thankfully gentle headwind spinning up the valley. Only able to maintain a thirteen average up to the bottom of Johnson Hollow but picked up the pace once over the hump in Pine Valley. Legs started to feel good after the first hour and was making good time up Middle Road now aided by a tailwind. Had to take a detour from original plan as had expected to descend on Fitzpatrick. A large sign said that Fitpatrick Hill Road was closed where it passes over Catherine Creek. Had an issue with the sign though as Fitzpatrick doesn't pass over Catherine Creek. Normally I expect a sign that says road closed ahead X miles. This time the State went to great expense to make a huge detailed and probably expensive sign that just confused me. If I didn't have an event in the morning, I would have continued onward on to find out where exactly the road was closed. I opted instead to descend Millport Hill Road that is a nasty climb up and a brake wearing descent down. Once in Millport I caught the tailwind and picked up the tempo enough to get the average up to fifteen. The wind did shift on the last two miles into town, so I guess the weatherman wasn't totally wrong. Passed by the bottom of Fitpatrick and there was no warning signage there at all. Turned out to be a pleasant ride despite my confused state.
