 Heat Wave Day 2
It was supposed to be another rather warm day but started out for some mild climbing in seventy degree weather. Three climbs on the Dundee route was the plan for the day on the South Wind version where I head up SR 14 along the lake to use the tailwind and come back over the hill on the return leg. Started out fairly well on the first climb on SR 14 N out of Watkins and did pretty well on the first mile of the climb. After that it was back to the smaller gears and a slow walk up the remainder of the climb. Had good speeds over the rolling flats to Glenora and had a good average before starting the second climb on the Torrey-Dundee Road. Had visions of hammering this fairly mild climb but soon found myself back in reality struggling up the hill. I was being followed by a tractor hauling some medieval device that took up both lanes of the road. Did fairly well staying ahead until the steeper sections came where despite trying, I was unable to keep any speed. Tractor couldn't pass due to limited ability up the hill and there really wasn't a shoulder so we just kept going at a rather slow speed. He passed me as the grade lessened and I thought I would be able to keep up with him but had ridden my limit for a bit too long and he tractored away. Had a fast coast into Dundee and still had a decent average. Last time I did this ride the third climb out of Dundee on SR 14A S was my best and hoped to repeat today. Had visions of averaging a seventeen as I started the climb but couldn't really put anything together and just survived the climb okay but decimated the average speed. Had a good time and great speed on the downhill from Reading Center to Watkins spending three miles in the mid-thirties. Got into Watkins and stopped at a couple of light and appeared to have my first bonk of the year. Legs were empty and the final two miles now were expected to be most unpleasant. Looked at the computer and noticed that the temperature was over a hundred so it might have been the heat rather than a bonk. Either way the last couple of miles were unfun. Started out well and finished poorly but overall enjoyed the ride.
