 Rockingham, NC
Relocated yesterday from Tennessee to Cheraw, SC for a few days before heading for Virginia and my next event. Didn't ride yesterday as had an extended drive as had to bypass North Carolina due to hurricane damaged roads. Ended up having to drive through Virginia to get to South Carolina. Today I drove a few miles north to Rockingham, NC for a fifty-mile ride around Richmond County. I had worked in Richmond County for a couple of years around the turn of the century and had logged many miles in the area. The course headed north out of Rockingham and climbed a shallow grade steadily for the first twenty miles. Thought I might have remembered some of the roads, but it didn't turn out that way. The road was a highway but had little traffic and passed through miles of sparsely packed residential houses and standing pines. The roads occasionally had pine straw accumulation on the wide shoulders. I did remember the pine straw from the rides of olde. Thought it might be a fairly tame ride until I hit the northern part of the county where I finally picked up some climbing. The last half of the course passes through farms and logging areas and provided for more interesting riding. There were several climbs with most being less than a mile long and around a hundred feet. There were a couple of climbs with over two hundred feet. Most of the climbs were between five and seven percent grades, but I did hit one that went over eleven and threatened my riding the course in the big chainring. Traffic was sparse and what I did encounter seemed friendly offering an occasional warning honk of the horn. Turned out to be a good ride though the course file was outdated and lost some time riding around Ellerbe as my computer tried to sort out my route. It kept telling me I was off course and wanted to take me back to the start cutting twenty miles off the route. Finally got it sorted out and didn't have any more problems until I was passing back through Rockingham heading back to the start. Appears they put in a new highway and switched some streets to one way since the course was produced. Ended up going the wrong way up a street on one section but never saw any signage indicating it was one way. Had to abandon the course file after that but easily found my way back to the start. Turned out to be a fine riding day with great weather, low traffic, good riding surface and fun riding terrain.
