Decided on doing some climbing but not chasing numbers, although I couldn't resist taking a peak now and then. Goal was to just climb steady and enjoy the ride. Headed up Old Odessa and it is finally clear of all the loose stone. Trekked on to Odessa and headed up Ridge Road but took the off ramp at Seymoreville down Middle Road for a fast descent. It does have one steep blind curve through a gully that almost always provides a thrill. Followed Middle Road through the rollers to Horseheads and then headed up the second climb toward Sullivanville via SR 13N. Caught a tailwind and made good time on this climb. Seems much easier and miles shorter now that my climbing is improving. After the downhill to the Junction headed back down SR 224 to Odessa. Had a decent average speed for a relaxed day heading into town but that all changed on the final climb up Lower Foots Hill. Got to the climb and thought no problem-I'll just power through the short steep section. It isn't very long but has a grade in the upper teens and probably twenty if you bisect the curve. Hit the wall and immediately died and quickly shifted into the granny gear and struggled through the climb at a very slow pace. After the steep section it continues to climb with a couple of steps in the teens. Went back to a relaxed pace on the remainder of the road by necessity not choice until I came out above Burdett. After that it is all fast twisting downhill ending with a dive bombing descent down Skyline. Didn't do much dive bombing today though as there was some ditch cleaning going on and had to stop mid descent for a flagman. Felt strong on two climbs and weak on the final one but it was a very good day for cycling weatherwise with seventy degrees and mild winds.
