 Western Climbs
Missed yesterday's nice riding weather trying to shake my recurring cold but spent some time swapping my chainrings and wheels from Florida to Carolina terrain changing the 54/40 for a milder 52/36. Rained most of the morning but had a couple hour window of riding weather before thunderstorms passed through later in the afternoon. Didn't go far from home but tried out my new set up on three climbs on the western wall of the valley. Headed up Cronk Road first and it was the hardest climb of the three starting out steep before a brief flat area on a bridge as it passes over the falls that dominates the main street of the village before continuing with some nasty steepness. It gave me a good opportunity to check out the alignment of my granny gear. Quickly descended down the hospital hill then headed to Watkins and climbed Old Corning. It was my second attempt and seemed quite a bit easier than it did last week. Climbed faster with less watts aided by the lower gear ratios. Descended hospital hill again as it started to rain. Clouds didn't look too foreboding yet, so thought I'd have enough time to get another climb in hoping the rain would subside. Started up Dug Road that I had climbed on Sunday, and it too turned out to be easier today. Got pelted by a few hailstones on the ascent but didn't bother me too much as it was still good riding with the seventy-degree temperature. Shower continued throughout the climb, but it wasn't falling hard enough to soak me so kept on climbing. Climbed steady throughout the ride but wasn't able to get the average over fourteen but did achieve by one hundred feet of climbing per mile. Turned out to be an enjoyable ride despite the wind, rain and hail.
