 Good Start Poor Finish
Went against convention and headed out on a medium distance ride with a strong tailwind at the start. Headed up Old Odessa and had a fairly steady climb on the recently oiled and stoned road. It was better than last time as could ride in a car tire path. Bad part was the deep pile of loose stones swept over by the auto traffic. There wouldn't be any pulling over to let cars go by. Only had one go by though and he gave me a wide berth. I did get a puncture, but it appeared to have sealed quickly with my tubeless setup. Did okay, considering, on the climb besting nine miles an hour. rode through Odessa and headed out to Mecklenburg on SR 228. Had to finish the first climbing portion with a gradual three-mile climb getting a thousand feet in early. Ended up slower on the second section than normal especially with a tailwind. Got over the peak though and mashed the big gear for a few miles and getting to Mecklenburg with a thirteen five. After that it was rollers to T-Burg then more tailwind and rolling grades to Interlaken where I turned to the west and headed over the hill on SR 96 to Lodi. Went into the hill with a fifteen average a full mile an hour faster than my last ride on this course. Climbed another two or three miles of three percent grade then down hilled to Lodi. Didn't lose much speed over the hill and thought I would really make time on the downhill section despite the stiff headwind. Thought the downhill would cancel the wind but quickly found out I was the one canceled. Had nothing left and speed dropped even on the steep down grades. Rolled into Valois for the final two-mile five percent grade climb and immediately went into suffer mode. Not sure it would rate as a death ride, but it was close as I just wanted it to be over. Was able to recover a bit and get the average up to sixteen before the finish but that really was disappointing after the good start. Instead of covering the last twenty miles in the twenties spent some sections struggling for twelve. Really one of the worst days I've had this year.
