Opted for a long ride with two good sized climbs first out through Coopers Plains via Monterey then to Corning and a climb up Whiskey Creek. Weather was excellent at eighty degrees with a slight south wind. Ride starts off with a mean climb up Steuben St in Montour with the first crest at the race track. The climb is five or six miles long with the first mile being difficult and the remainder a bit more forgiving of those without good climbing skills. I thought I was doing okay on the first steep section, but as I approached my first time check at the traffic light, I was only at nine miles an hour whereas I really needed to be over ten to be considered a decent climb. My goal for the ride was to average seventeen that would be a challenge but not impossible. The second more forgiving section of climbing went well and kept my momentum up to the track. There is a brief respite from the climbing with a good downhill to Townsend before another few miles of gentle climbing. Had good speed on the downhill when I hit some debris and got a puncture. Sounded like a fairly aggressive leak by the sound, but it immediately sealed. Usually it takes a few revolutions of spraying sealant before sealing, but it was quick today. Assume it was the high speed that distributed the sealant or centripetal force aiding it. Thought my ride might be over rather quickly but the sealant held and didn't even seem to lose much pressure. Continued climbing to the south edges of Sugar Hill and then started the long shallow decline to Cooper's plains. It's fourteen or fifteen miles to the turn and was able to keep a strong steady pace usually in the low twenties. Average speed was climbing nicely as I made the turn onto the highway and headed for Corning. The road gods were kind today and didn't hit any lights red throughout Painted Post nor Corning. Went into the climb up Whiskey Creek at a little over a sixteen average. Climb was a bit difficult and took much longer to finish than it used to when racing it on the Tuesday Night rides years ago. Still got over the four or five mile climb at a little over fifteen average. Made up my losses on the long descent to Elmira burning off the elevation I gained on the long climb. Rolled unto SR 352 and the flatlands back over sixteen again. Still had over twenty miles of flat and downgrade left aided by a tailwind, so things looked good for the seventeen average. Road gods decided to be cruel again as the average dropped as I rode through Elmira. I hit every light red. Often couldn't even get back up to speed before being hampered by the next redlight. Had seven miles of aggravating riding. Normally getting the average up on the last downgrade section is achievable but with sixty miles in it is fairly difficult to pull all those miles up. Gave it everything I had but could only get the average up to sixteen nine as I rolled into Montour. Was a bit disappointed but had a very strong ride and ended up totally drained. Good day on the bike other than the accursed lights.
