 St Augustine via the A1A
It was a bit warmer today and though the north wind was again blowing it wasn't nearly as bad as yesterday. Today's course was more enjoyable then yesterday's outing as today was mostly open road. Started from my motel in Palm Coast and headed east across the toll bridge to the A1A. Had to weave my way through bike trails and traffic to get to the bridge but after four miles or so reached the A1A. Once on the highway it was eighteen straight miles into the north wind before the next turn. Tried to keep the watts up, and figured I would push hard until St Augustine Beach and then maybe go into tourist mode and ride across the Lion Drawbridge into St Augustine proper. Made a solid effort but was only able to maintain a little over sixteen into the eight mile an hour headwind. Picked up a couple of riders that drafted me for a few miles until we rolled into St Augustine Beach. One of the riders offered to pull for awhile and we picked up to twenty since now there were two of us working and the buildings and vegetation cut down on the wind. The other riders were turning off before the bridge, and I crossed the bridge alone. Felt gear to ride slowly through the old section of the city. Riding through the city probably really hurt the average speed, but it was the highlight of the day. Original route got fouled by a road closure and had to do some heavy traffic on RT 1 to get back on course. Road had a bike lane, but it had been recently milled and wasn't much fun to ride on. Got back on the A1A heading south and had a twenty mile section of straight tailwind before getting back to Palm Coast. Sun felt great and kept the speed near twenty for most of the way back. Not used to spending hours in the saddle lately, and knees started to get a bit sore after the fifty mile mark. Finished off the ride over the toll bridge and through some bike trails to get back to the start. Had a good time on the bike today and if the forecast holds it will be warmer and with less wind tomorrow.
