Rained yesterday in the morning and although it got sunny late in the day the temperature dropped forty degrees and high winds had me taking another day off. It was still cold and windy in the mountains today so dropped down into the foothills of NC for a ride. There wasn't much wind there and by waiting to ride to in the afternoon gained about ten degrees and got to ride in the sixties. Started a sixty-mile loop in Dobson, NC. that had lots of climbing but no mountain climbs. There were seventeen climbs listed with several between two-hundred and three-hundred and fifty feet. Felt good at the start after a couple of miles of downhill then started a series of ripsaw climbs. First climb was a little one and thought that if they were all like that it might be an easy day. Reality set in on the second climb where I planned on using the big chainring but ran out of leg way before the crest and cracked when the grade got to ten percent. After the second climb the rest came about every two miles. Since the climbs probably averaged a mile or better long, it turned into a climb and coast day. Downhills were twisted with steep sections with a fair road surface. Got spoiled yesterday with really smooth descents. Unfortunately, couldn't carry much momentum from the downhills into the climbs that slowed things down a bit. Ten percent grades were not uncommon but like yesterday most climbs started steep at the onset and tapered off over the top. Had one short climb that was thirteen percent but had little trouble with it as it was short enough to stay comfortably out of the saddle. There were only a couple miles of fairly flat terrain in the first half of the ride usually as the road ran parallel to a river. The sawtooth climbs continued to the halfway point and then the course mellowed out for the second half. At the thirty mile mark the road started heading downward and got a good ten miles of relief from the climbing. Route descended into Elkin before that had a few urban highway climbs and an occasional bike lane. Last twenty miles returned to climbing back into the foothills, but the climbs were not as severe as those in the first half and on several was able to carry some downhill peed into the climbs. Ended up pushing some headwind for a few miles until a final two-mile descent back to the start. Pretty nice course if you like short incessant climbs. There wasn't much traffic and only got harassed by one dog. Climbed much better than Saturday but not nearly as well as Friday. Probably will head back south to the foothills as it appears it will still be chilly in the mountains tomorrow.
