Today was another travel day but it was warm enough to ride at daybreak so checked out early and decided to take a long slow ride. I have a metric tomorrow in Front Royal but not sure whether it will be a touring pace or a hold on as long as I can. There are only forty riders preregistered so unless there is a good day of turn out don't think there will be any large pack riding. Started today at Freedom Park again and had another early climb through Cranston Mill Pond gully. Intended to spend the day spinning the climbs and coasting the downhills but ended up out of the saddle as I was holding up traffic on the steep climb and wanted to minimize my impact. Like yesterday's ride it was gentle rolling climbs to the north. Had another detour around the I-64 overpass construction at 660 that added four fairly flat highway miles to my course. Kind of anticipated it, so it wasn't a big deal. After getting across I-64 it was rolling climbs down to the closed road that requires a portage over a derelict bridge. Single lane to bridge looked like it was somewhat maintained as it was clear of the debris I remembered from last season. Past the bridge it is a short climb on the Holly Fork Road before rolling through the numerous horse farms along the York River. Low traffic and good riding on that road. There are a couple of two-hundred-foot climbs heading back up to the interstate but are both over a mile long, so other than a short ten percent section, they can be comfortably spun. As great as the Holly Fork Road was for riding the next section on RT 273 was miserable. The road is narrow and has limited sight distance and no shoulder at all. Traffic today was heavy and most unfriendly speeding by within inches and most likely exceeding the speed limit. Felt lucky to get through a few miles on it unscathed. In the future I plan on minimizing time on the route by adding another loop on side roads to cut off a couple miles of stressful riding. After that though it is back on really nice roads. There are quite a few small climbs and occasional fast descents to help break up the ride. Return trip was on low traffic roads that pass over a couple reservoirs and through farmland and woodlands. Same as yesterday though the course requires a second trip on Cranston Pond Mill Road. The eleven percent grade was a bit on the tough side and had to go out of the saddle and struggle a bit to get over it. Did put on a little speed over the last few miles to get the average up to fifteen. Legs felt good after the slow cruise and should be in good shape for the ride tomorrow if I get a good recovery tonight.
