Wind shifted from the north to the south warming it up a little. Took the mountain bike out for a ride heading up the valley on the rail trail. Thought I was overdressed in the sun, but as soon as the sun went behind a cloud I was properly dressed. Saw three bikes coming down the trail as I was ascending, one fat bike and two commuters. Also saw a few dog walkers out today. Had originally planned on going to the post office and return via the highway taking advantage of the wind. Since it was a bit warmer than expected, I decided to push on upward to the trailhead at Pine Valley. As I was approaching Millport one of the bolts in my handlebar stem came loose. Didn't think it was an insurmountable problem as just rolled the crossbar back into position. The bolt kept loosing though and soon had excessive slop on the crossbar. Figured if the bolt snapped or I put to much torque on the handlebars the stem would break and I would certainly crash. Of course, the small toolkit I always carry on the road bike was still at home. Been riding this mountain bike for over twenty years with only an occasional flat tire. Started riding with one hand firmly on the stem and the other on the rear brake. Also bailed on the trail as soon as I got to Millport and headed back via highway making for a short ride. Wasn't very comfortable but figured I would be okay unless I hit some road debris. Saw one other riding on a road bike climbing up the valley into the wind and he didn't look very happy. I was also unhappy but for a different reason.
