Not in very good shape for the tour this year but since I registered last winter and had a couple of teammates going decided against my better judgement to make a go of it. Told Steve and Doug that I wouldn't be riding with them as am too heavy to do much fast climbing and would be taking it easy today. Weather was favorable though it was a tad windy but most of the climbing would be in Letchworth Park into the wind and the heavily wooded area would provide some shelter. Had around a hundred riders lined up for the fifty-miler. Course starts out with four or five miles of downhill before hitting the first climb. I stayed near the front at the start to avoid any incidents and felt fairly well. As soon as we hit the first climb, I was in trouble. Soon was passed by first Doug and then Steve as well as a third of the pack. By the time I got to the top of the first climb the pack had disappeared and only single riders were visible on the next downhill. I was able to catch and pass the single riders but never saw the front again. As soon as we started the fifteen-mile climb through the park I developed severe stomach cramps. Soon was passed by the single riders I passed on the downhill as well as dozens of other riders that had been dropped on the run from the start. Stopped at an overlook and hoped the pain would pass but had no luck there. Kept climbing slowly in the granny and passed the first rest stop and the turnoff for the thirty-mile route. Stopped again alongside the road and considered turning around and returning to the start on the thirty-mile course. Kept going as either course would still require twenty miles of climbing so trudged along up the park. Kept getting passed by more and more riders. After an hour of suffering the stomach cramps went away. Neared the top of the park that had two short walls that I was dreading. Lost more positions on the first and was getting passed on the last one. As soon as I got over the steep section I was able to go up a few gears and quickly outdistanced the riders I was near. Climbing continued for a few more miles and passed a large group that was waiting for lost sheep and another pair of riders. Started to feel stronger and came out of the saddle and finished off the last climb before a flat section. Went into time trial mode on the flat section into the wind and started catching single riders. Started to feel stronger but came back to reality by being passed and dropped by a trio of riders. I was already riding my limit and couldn't even come close to drafting the trio. Soon was passed by the group of fifteen that was by the road collecting lost sheep. I was able to latch on and drafted a mile or so until the last climb before the rest stop at Pike. Got dropped when the front riders sped up over the climb but was soon able to latch back on to the section of the group that got dropped. Had a coke at the rest stop and got back on the bike. Got embarrassed on the fourteen percent grade out of Pike by two separate riders that spun easily by me. By the time I got to the top one of the riders had dropped me by at least a minute. Started chasing with a good tailwind with intention of catching up. One of the riders had stopped and was waiting for a friend near the top. Chased hard and was making up on the first rider but was quickly passed by the waiting rider and his friend. Wasn't able to latch on and started to fade away. The two riders caught the first rider, and I was soon chasing a trio. After a few miles of downhill, I finally caught and passed them on a short climb out of Silver Springs. Two of the riders caught me soon after, but they were without the third. I latched on a drafted for a mile or so. We were soon passed by the fast smooth trio that had gone by me before Pike. I came out of the draft and took a long pull and caught a pair of riders, but the trio was already out of sight. Pulled off and tried to get back in the draft but couldn't hold it. Only had a couple miles left so I pretty much decided just to spin in. Made up some time on the last climb and was able to pass the two riders as they coasted down the last hill. Not my finest ride but had a fair second half after a terrible first. Not really glad I came. Steve and Doug had good rides and a good time though.
