 Alien Portal Ride
Wind was out of the north and quite a bit cooler today so headed out for some climbing. Started out heading up Old Odessa again. Made good time on the steep section on the bottom as it seems to be getting easier. Kept a good cadence over the middle section and was pretty sure I would break my record for the year. Missed my chance though as jumped my chain shifting to the big ring for the final push. Tried to get it back on while riding but eventually had to stop. Ended up with a nine point five anyways that was still decent for my year so far. Next headed up Grant Road to Cayutaville. It tends to be a bit climby until reaching the forest border where it flattens out. Today's course would have me circumventing Connecticut Hill that according to the internet contains the Alpine Alien Portal. Supposedly it is a hotbed for Bigfoot, ghosts and UFOs activity. Have been in the area for years and have ridden the mountain bike and skied throughout the forest without finding any evidence of supernatural activity. I have seen evidence of the big foot hunters and grave robbers but that seems to not be the fad anymore. I kept my eyes open just in case. After a few miles of flat terrain did one short climb and had a fast decent to Mecklenburg. I was able to get there averaging over thirteen and that is better than normal for me as added more climbing by skirting the forest. Climbing continued on SR 79 E out of the village to the Black Oak Road. The climb up Black Oak is pretty much straight south for three miles and up six-hundred feet. Eventually the road leads to the tower road and the highpoint of Tompkins County. I turned off after climbing only part way as I wanted to stay on pavement and avoid horseflies. Got to the top of the ride with a twelve-five average and dropped down to Tompkins Corners. Made good speed on the twisting downhill aided by the north wind. Had to do a couple of small climbs on Sebring Road before dropping back to SR 13 S. Speed started to drop a bit as legs got tired and didn't think I would be able to get above fifteen for the day as still had six miles of headwind form Alpine back to Odessa. Legs recovered a little though and was able to get in the high fourteens before doing the fast descent to Montour. I was able just squeak out the fifteen before the finish. Enjoyed the ride more than usual as by adding more climbing I get to expand my course options and don't have to spend as much time in the valley. Didn't see any bigfoot or UFOs or even any other cyclists but that doesn't mean they aren't out there.
