Rained all yesterday so didn't get to ride, but sun was out again to today so put some miles in on the bike. Drove to Charles City to do another local course. There appeared to be another tour going on the Cap2Cap trail, and it had a rest stop near the parking lot of the courthouse where I parked. I saw several dozens of riders on the trail, so it must be a popular event. My course today was in the same area as the one I rode from here on Sunday but with different roads with similar rolling grade terrain. It started heading north from the trail into the hills and had to push a slight wind for a couple miles on a two-lane before the road went into the woods on secondary roads for most of the remaining miles. Roads were low traffic and passed through mostly farmland and a few small settlements. Passed two huge brick churches that appeared to be of the exact same design. Passed by some huge cornfields where the corn has already sprouted. Glad to be past the manure spreading stage. Longest stretch was a little over five miles long that with most of the legs being two or three miles. The frequent turns slow the speed down a bit but make for better touring when riding solo. Had another large shadow pass over my shoulder and thought it was another eagle, but it turned to be a large hawk just checking out the road. He didn't stay long and soon passed me and went over an open field in search of lunch. The course had quite a few twisting roads split between rolling grades and occasional flat sections. There was only one climb listed that was a whopping forty-nine feet. Passed through an undeveloped area that I thought might be another state park, but it turned out to be a Civil War battlefield. After going through the battlefield, I dropped down out of the hills unto the rail trail where I followed a rider for a mile or two before the course took me back up into the hills. Next section of the road was in pretty bad shape for VA standards with broken pavement and an occasional pothole. It was a bit difficult to ride in as the sun was shining brightly through the tree cover, and it was creating patches of sunbeams and shadow making it was a bit difficult to discern the potholes from the shadows. A few more miles had me climbing now back up to the rail trail to finish off the ride. Turned out to be a good day on the bike with good weather, a great course and strong legs.
