Didn't get out yesterday as planned as though the temperatures were in the forties, the winds were in the twenties which put the wind chills near freezing. I did get a workout on the computrainer in the morning, so it wasn't really wimping out. Or so I tell myself. Today on the other hand was very rideable with a temperature of forty five and a light south wind. Had planned on riding into the wind but forecast had the wind possibly shifting during the ride and didn't want to push the headwind out and have a crosswind back. So I headed north to Dundee with the wind at my back. While I was disappointed with my climbing yesterday, today I had a good time in the climbs though they lacked any steep sections. Legs felt fast today and headed up the Gabriel's Junction climb assisted by the wind. Spun the hill in the big chainring and made good time- at least for January. After the climb kept a steady speed to Starkey then turned into the light wind with a small climb that also went well. Made the third climb out Dundee with a crosswind. The legs started feeling sore but kept putting out the watts for a decent ascent. Once over the hill the exciting part of the ride occurred as I overtook a group of Amish schoolgirls out for a ride. They were actually making good time in a loose paceline despite less then aero kits what with bonnets and flowing skirts. Their bikes weren't very high tech either with fat tires and one with a crate latched on a rack. They weren't lacking in spirit though as once they saw me coming they picked up the speed. Didn't take me long to overcome and pass them, but they were all smiles despite their loss. Its been months since I've seen any kids on bikes on the road that weren't Amish. It got a bit chilly on the descent into Watkins which was the only time the weather was unpleasant. Had a nice ride and some fair climbing without too much effort which was very encouraging.
