As I turn east off of Scudder onto McDonnell Blvd, I am usually reminded of visibility issues as I look into the sun rising just above the horizon and I try to watch the road ahead of me, as well as looking for cars coming toward me as they round the bend in the road. I am also mindful of the cars that are potentially approaching me from behind having the same visibility issues - except they need to be more mindful of me. Those cars can assume any oncoming cars will be on their own side of the double yellow line and therefore are not a threat to them. On the other hand, that little stretch of road does not have a shoulder for me to feel as safe - so there is a little sense of urgency on my part to get to the 'bend in the road' where there is a shoulder for me to use and the sun becomes less of an issue.
Another stretch with similar issues is when I turn east onto Lackland to the jog onto Walton so I can take Midland across I-170 before heading south on Walton. However Lackland does have shoulder, but with its slight bend and the BP gas station I am vigilant about the traffic for safety’s sake. Today, however, as I turned onto Lackland there was a stark contrast – the sun was not an issue here because of the cloud cover that had rolled in since my time on the initial stretch of McDonnell Blvd. As I rolled down Lackland I reflected on that earlier stretch of road and how, as it bent around the east end of the airport, I was once again mindful of the situation and then noticed the clear skies over me in contrast to the cloud line off to the west – way off to the west. Well, while I was making my way down McDonnell/Brown Rd, the clouds made their way into the area – like the weatherman said they would this morning.
