Ride Description: Went to Roland Olson Forest Preserve to see if the trail was rideable. The first 2.5 miles were pretty tough, the snow was like riding in sand. At times I would be working as hard as I could to go 3 mph. I averaged 5.3 mph to the water tower bridge in Roscoe.
Once I got to Roscoe the bike path was plowed and pretty easy riding. But it was only plowed to the bank, so I rode around and explored Roscoe. Did a few laps around the cemetary.
The trip back however was the toughest 2.5 miles I've ever done. I'll bet I only averaged 4 mph even with a tailwind. I forgot that the trail goes slightly downhill to Roscoe, and that slight uphill grade in the soft snow was just enough to make life miserable. I'll bet I had to stop 7 to 10 times, to catch my breath. The wind was only noticable in a couple places.
I wish I would have worn my HR monitor. Those 5 miles were tougher than any spin class so far. |

The Stone Bridge Trail was packed down pretty good from the snowmobiles, but I thought the recent sub zero temps would have hardened the trail a little more. I was only sinking in an inch or two, but that was enough to make it feel like I was riding in sand.
This was the toughest workout I've had in a while. I really like the singlespeed as a "workout/training" bike, there's no wimping out and shifting to an easier gear on this bike. (Something I would most likely do if I could.)
