 Horse Race
Had to take a couple of days off due to the onset of cold running rampant through our crew at work. Hopefully it appears to have run its course rather quickly as I have left is a little congestion. Still cold here in Florida although today was a little better with a brief high near sixty and very little wind. Headed south to Indian Prairie and kept an easy pace on the way down with nothing of note happening other than the satisfying turning of the cranks. Didn't expect anything to happen on the way back either but was surprised by a charging horse coming up behind me. He was at a full gallop and let out a series of whineys as he passed me. Thought first I may have spooked him but since he was running parallel rather than turning away I figured he wanted to race. I got out of the saddle and gave pursuit but gained little on him for the first quarter mile. He must have had some quarter horse in him as after the quarter I started to gain on him and eventually came up beside him. As I began to pass him I gave him some of my best horse taunting which spurred him into another burst of speed. He kicked out both his back legs, shook his head and let out another series of whineys. This time I was able to match his acceleration and stayed alongside him. We both started to slow down a bit as I was having trouble sucking air into my burning lungs. I saw several other horses were coming toward us across the prairie, I assume wanting to get in on the race, but we ran out of racetrack as the edge of his pasture came up on us quickly. I gave a final surge to pull ahead of him and taunted him one final time before he turned away to avoid his barbed wire restraints. Felt good to do some speed rather than the constant churning I usually do on the flatlands. Did one final long interval as I stayed with traffic during a half mile one lane detour through road construction. Turned out to be a fun ride and the best one I've cranked out this year.
