Temperature rose above freezing today, and with the bright sunshine, it turned out to be good weather for a short winter ride. Got the mountain bike out and headed out onto ice and hard packed snow covered secondary roads. First time out on the bike since replacing the saddle post I broke climbing last December. It really needed adjustment, as it was too low but seemed a little cold for making adjustments so just did the ride as is. Snow pack is still around six inches though it has a tough crust on the top. Rock Cabin Road was a bit tricky. There has been some truck traffic so was able to ride mostly in the ruts. Had occasional adrenaline boosts from ice lined pothole sections where the front wheel kept trying to get away but kept it upright. Side streets in Watkins still had a slick snow surface, but the main drag had been salted to pavement. Tried to ride the Catherine Valley Trail but the frozen tracks from all the foot traffic was about as much fun as riding on ice covered cobble stones. After an early crash, I abandoned the trail and finished the ride on pavement. Was planning on getting the road bike out tomorrow but will either have to stay on the main highway or take out the mountain bike again. Even the main drag has some icy sections where the snow has melted in the sunlight and refrozen on sections of the shade covered road.
