Jacque & I car pooled to work again today – for the third day in a row – but this time she was taking me to work, to drop me off then heading onto work and then coming back to pick me up after work.
As the weekend drew to a close I was half thinking about riding to work on Monday, even after the light snow Sunday morning. But the road conditions were not real reassuring Sunday night so I nixed those plans. That turned out to be a good choice as we were getting ready for work this morning and watching the news which continued to report about the accidents and icy road conditions in the area.
As we were heading south on I-170 just past the Scudder overpass, and approaching the bottleneck at I-70, I started to brake as we were closing in on the stopped traffic ahead of us. I then pressed harder on the brakes feeling that we weren’t slowing down enough, but afraid that we’d hit a slick spot. Then I checked my rearview mirror to see where the car behind us was at so see if they were showing any signs of trouble. What I saw in the mirror was a yellow sub-compact car (maybe a Geo Metro) sliding from the right-hand lane all the way across my mirror (i.e. lanes 2 & 3) then in my driver’s side mirror it went on into the snow filled median. WOW – all four lanes without hitting (or being hit by) any of the dozens of cars proceeding down the road, and its not like traffic was ‘light’ this morning either.
We made it to my work without any other signs of incidents, then Jacque made it onto her work, as well.
