Weather broke for a bit with the temperature rocketing to thirty-five degrees, so I headed out on the mountain bike for a supposedly easy ride. Despite the abundant sunshine and above freezing temperatures there was the drawback of a sixteen mile an hour wind. I headed up the rail trail to Millport that is mostly wooded and hugs the western wall of the valley. The effect of the wind was greatly reduced, but it was still seven miles of upgrade on a hard packed snow surface. I ran across occasional small patches of ice but nothing close to be considered a sheet of ice. Legs were still sore from yesterday's severe beating on the trainer and got that not so pleasant burning ache in the quads before running out of climb. There was quite a little evidence of foot traffic on the trail, but it appears that only one or possible two fat bikes have been on the path in the last few days. I was greatly relieved to make it to the post office where I turned around and followed the highway home with a strong tailwind and downgrade. It wasn't a very pleasant ride although I didn't suffer from the cold nor the wind. Riding on the hardpack surface was fun at first but ended up being more work than fun over the last couple of miles. Still, it was nice to get outside in the sun.
