Returned to the smoother roads north of Paris today. Weather wasn't as fine as yesterday but after six weeks of riding at or below freezing I reckoned that 60 degrees with a few showers really wasn't all that bad. Had good tailwinds for most of the ride and while the road was often wet early in the ride I experienced no rain. Pleasant fairly fast ride( at least the first forty miles was)with the only excitement being that totally run down feeling I too often feel while racing just before being dropped by the pack. Unfortunately this happened at the end of a short series of multiple dog sprints. First set of dogs went down easy, but I thought the last set was going to have me. Having sprinted for nearly a kilometer my heart rate had maxed and my legs had turned to rubber. The last dog appeared to be cruising comfortably by my side as my speed rapidly began to drop. Just as I was considering dismounting and taking a defensive posture the dog too had reached his limit and faded away. I continued pedaling hoping that the pain in my legs would clear before I met another challenge. Too soon I spotted my next competitor standing middle of the road a few hundred meters ahead. It was big and white. The road was an incline into a headwind. Turning around wasn't an option as I didn't think I could best the previous dogs without some rest. Sometimes the road gods are cruel. Took a deep drink and pedaled on to meet the white demon. As I approached I noticed that it was a large goat in the middle of the road and was not a dog. My knowledge of goat sprinting is somewhat limited. I did figure that since a goat is a prey animal instead of a predator and was facing me it probably couldn't really see me. I accelerated as best as I could and hoped to pass it and be gone before it could see and turn on me. Turned out it was a nanny goat instead of a billy. Felt bad that I scared it when it ran away. Sun soon came out and caught a good tailwind back to Paris. The road gods can be merciful.
