 Alpine Ridge
Second day of riding out of Caddo Valley, AR. The balmy weather had moved on and the forecast for today's ride was high forties at the start with falling temperature and rising winds. Looked out of the motel this morning and saw less than inviting conditions. Talked myself into ridng and figured once the sun came out it wouldn't be any worse than northern riding in winter. Bundled up and headed directly into the wind which at fifteen miles an hour wasn't too bad. Plan was to get to the west before the wind got too bad and catch a predicted thirty mile an hour tailwind on the return leg. Enjoyed the ride despite the headwind as I spun my way up the long gradual climb out of the valley. The climb was fairly long at around sixteen miles but most of it was only one or two percent with the maximum at seven percent. Ride started to get difficult as I neared the top as the trees had been clear cut and there was no protection or relief from the increasingly harsh wind. Around twenty miles my heat balance went south as I no longer was producing enough heat to replace what the wind was stripping away. Feet stayed warm for which I was grateful but for some reason my right hand had gone numb and began to have issues shifting. Suffered for a few miles before making the turn at Amity and starting back on 84. Once the wind was at my back took my right glove off and rode barehanded and tried to get the circulation going by flexing it. Seemed to work okay and regloved when the feeling returned. Return ride was a gradaul downhill through the woods on a twisting, rolling road. Didn't get much enjoyment as was just counting down the miles until I could get out of the wind and cold
