Unbelievable weather for January will clear skies, warm winds, and a temperature in the mid-fifties. It was already near fifty when I got out to ride around noon. Decided with such a nice day I'd due a little distance and some hills so elected to do the Extended Sugar Hill ride. The ride goes from the lowest point in the county in Watkins to the highest point at Sugar Hill, although it is actually at the fire tower on Sugar Hill but close enough for me. The extended version of the route avoids steep climbs and instead goes in a round about way with a long gradual climb. Have lost a little weight since last time I went out climbing and was hoping my climbing may have improved. First climb out of Watkins though brought me back to a harsh reality as I struggled up the climb. Actually I kept a good cadence but speed was poor considering I had a big tailwind up the climb. Felt a little better on the second climb out of Rock Stream. The climb is ten miles long and is fairly gradual. Intended to try to stay in the saddle and keep a high cadence and for the most part did okay with only occcasional jaunts out of the saddle. Still at a slow rate but better than the first climb. Reached the peak at the twenty mile mark and had climbed around 1500 ft. Once at the peak the route continues in a round about way and avoids steep downhills passing through Beaver Dams then heading down Johnson Hollow to Millport. Winds were blowing pretty well but while they slowed me down they were warm enough not to be unpleasent. Didn't encounter any cyclists today and traffic was sparse once I passed through Watkins. Caught a great tailwind from Millport and felt fast but overall the climbing kept my average speed well below where I would like it to be on such a nice day.
