Temperatures appear to have hit the low point last night as it dropped into the twenties. South wind was supposed to bring the temperature back into the sixties by afternoon and thought I might get some warm riding in. Didn't work out as well as I had hoped as it took the sun most of the day to get the temperature up and I had to ride in the morning. So had to bundle up once again and head out with the temp in the low forties. Sun was out today and the wind was out of the south and warm today unlike yesterday's frigid northern version. Headed out of Caddo Valley and over the mountain to Hot Springs. Started out with some gradual climbing at a high cadence and felt really loose and strong over the first ten miles. Began to flag a little on the five percent approach to the big though short climb and started to dread the climb I'd been looking forward to for a couple of days. Cracked big time on the first section of the thirteen percent grade to the radio towers. Had to slowly spin my way over the top and wrung myself out to achieve the summit. Thought I'd recover on the downhill but I guess it is too early in the year for much of a recovery. Made it to route seven and began the long gradual climb over Needles Eye mountain. The climb is twice as long as the earlier climb but with half the grade. Couldn't get the spin going and had to climb slowly. Sun had come out though so had a pretty good ride as I enjoyed the radiant heat,birdsong, and occasional patch of vibrant green grass. Also was entertained by a stream of firetrucks passing me on the climb with thier sirens blaring and was a little perplexed as those trucks were passed by another firetruck with siren going the other way down the hill. Didn't seem very efficient and must be some sort of jurisdictual problem. Coasted down into Bismark where I got back on the end of yesterday's route. Had to fight the wind for the last ten miles and finished the ride quite fatigued but at least I could feel my fingers today.
