Sunny day with a temperature climbing to near forty was enough to convince me to ride outside instead of inside on the computrainer. Hardest part of the ride seemed to have been putting on all the cold weather gear. I really miss southern Florida where when selecting attire instead of how many layers to add the decision is whether or not to wear socks. I was surprised that the legs turned smoothly for the first few miles. I thought there would be more free water with the higher temperature but it appears that snow and ice are still well below the freezing point. At least the stuff I did run through was at least soft ice. Planned on only going to Reading Center but added on a couple miles with the Rock Stream loop after a low intensity slow climb out of Watkins. Coasted most of the downgrade Reading Center to Rock Stream as the near thirty mile speeds seemed to be sucking my core temperature down. Rode back in marginally warm sunshine to Watkins. Saw lots of emergency vehicles at Gabriel's Junction attending to a tractor trailer crash off the side of the overpass. I had gone over the same overpass an half hour earlier and had been passed by a tractor trailer. Fortunately for me that rig just dusted me with the salt that was trailing in its slip stream. Ride went downhill after the downhill as the western part of the valley was already in a cold twilight and that cold seemed to attach itself to me. Not a bad day for January- not too cold to ride but too cold to enjoy it.
