Today I was going to ride with the Over 60 MeetUp group from the Swamp Rabbit Cafe at 10 a.m. I rode from home down to Cleveland Park and was climbing Furman Way when I heard a loud pop from the back of my bike. A few cranks later I felt the back end of the bike wobbling. I stopped and reached behind me and found that my tire wasn't flat, but it had a major wobble in it. I walked the bike from Furman Way to TTR on Hudson Road (about 1 1/2 mile) to see what was up with it. They pulled the rear wheel suspecting that I had broken a spoke, but found that the drive-side hub flange had broken and two spokes had come loose from it. Broken spokes can be replaced easily but the rear wheel would need to be replaced or at least the rear hub and most likely the spokes. I had the original rear wheel for this bike at home with bad bearings in it. I called Cis and had her walk downstairs and get the rear wheel and drive to TTR where I was. They replaced the bearings in it and put the cassette on it and mounted it to the bike.
While they were doing that Cis and I drove to the Swamp Rabbit Cafe for a late breakfast. We split a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, a pair of hot chocolates, and I had a roasted pecan thumbprint cookie while Cis had an apple-walnut scone. We drove back to TTR to pick up the bike.
They had it finished and had test ridden it. I bought a new bell for it and put the reflector from the old wheel onto the even older wheel. I took off to ride home while Cis drove home, but the bike was squawking at odd times. I rode down the hill and to the next street on the trail then I turned back and rode back up to TTR. JJ adjusted the rear brake, trued the wheel slightly, and trimmed the brake pads from where they had worn differently than how they were sitting on this wheel. After that it was fine for the ride home. Those guys always test ride the bike, but I am much larger than they are and put a lot more strain on it than they do.
