Ride Description: After CAMBA Trail Work Day at Patsy Lake, I went over to the Grand Opening, ribbon cutting at the Makwa Trail. I ate a yummy Veggie Sub from SubLime Subs and went out to ride. With only two apples for breakfast, the sub wasn't enough fuel for my body, as I bonked at 14 miles. I tried to eat some Shot Bloks and a Clif Bar, but they were frozen, so I downed an almost solid Gel at my turn around point.
A lot of riders went out before me, but they must have taken the Birkie Trail back, because I only saw 3 riders (One was Harry, I talked to him a bit.) and 3 trail runners/hikers. (The trail runner said he saw a wolf in the area I saw him.) I wanted to do a 25 mile ride, but I was losing light and getting tired. I waited too long. I bonked, and didn't get back to the Trail Head until it was pretty dark. I was lucky the snow had not melted, and the white background surrounding the brown ribbon of singletrack made it much easier to find my way back.
My new Gaerne Eskimo shoes did keep my feet warm in over 4 hours of 32° temperatures. After a while they felt like they loosened up a bit, so I should be able to wear a thicker, or two socks in colder weather. I was wearing a pair of Smartwool hiking socks. The 25 mph winds started to blow some leaves off the trees, but other than the sound of the wind in the top of the trees, The wind was not a factor. |

Wow! What a ride! One of the prettiest rides I've ever done.
No Studded tires today. Rocks were a little slippery, but there aren't too many of them on the Makwa. I'd say conditions were almost perfect. I just took it easy, and took a LOT of pictures.

While in the parking lot, with not enough energy to even take my wheel off, so I could put the bike in the car, A guy I saw earlier, riding with his dog, came over and started talking about the trail. It was his first time here and he starts telling me the trail was nice, but it's going to require a lot a maintenance. He said the corridor wasn't wide enough or something...(After his first sentence about the trail being high maintenance, I wasn't listening as attentively as I could have.) ...and it would need constant trimming to keep the saplings from taking over the trail... And he knew this because he said he builds trails himself... I was too tired to disagree, or tell him he was nuts. Makwa Rules!
