I took off this afternoon to see how long it would take me to ride to work. I didn't want to push the time - just see what an average ride would be like. Less than half a mile from home I rode by a little old man standing in a ditch blowing a bosun's whistle. He yelled to me if I had seen his little dog up the street. I told him that there was only a big dog behind the fence up that way. Then he yelled that his dog must be up the other street and asked if I'd go find him. I rode up the street and found a chihuahua wandering around. I rode across the street from him and called out Chico after I had passed him. He looked at me and when I circled around him he ran for home as hard as he could run. The little man was blowing his whistle and calling "Chico!" to get him home. As I was leaving the man told me that his 92nd birthday is tomorrow. I rode on down to the park and headed south down the trail. I crossed Pleasantburg and rode up to Parkins Mill. I wandered over to East Parkins Mill then to Parkins Lake Road. It took me 50 minutes to get to work under those conditions, including chasing down Chico. I rode on out to Mauldin Road then turned to go home the same way, but once I was in Cleveland Park I headed north up the trail and followed it to the Swamp Rabbit Cafe. I went in and ordered a double espresso and a chocolate chip pumpkin scone. I bought a second scone to take home for Cis. The ride on home was a normal ride. I found that getting onto Laurens Road during rush hour was a little hectic and that I had to really keep an eye on traffic, but I made it home safely.
