 Round the Lake
Wanted to make the best use of the dwindling sixty degree days. Forecast for today had predicted a fair day with mild early morning temperatures. Convinced Mighty Young Joe to play hooky and take a ride around Seneca Lake. We strated off with temperatures in the mid fifties and a slight south wind. Figured it might be one of the last days to ride without legwarmers other than short afternoon rides. First half of the ride was pleasant as we discussed this year's racing and plans for next year. Opted for the scenic route through Lakemont and Himrod and for a leisurely pace. Missed a turn again above the Keuka Inlet and dropped down into Penn Yan. We were able to pick up a few bonus miles and an extra climb do to the oversight. Headed north out of Penn Yan and eventually connected with 14A and followed it until we were above Geneva. The easy part of the ride ended with a short coast down into the city. Stopped in the park and replenished the water bottles and started our ride back into a headwind. The gradual warming brought with it a gradual increase in the wind. The headwind was at least steady lacking some of the recent violent gusting that has been going on as the nice weather retreats to Dixie. Hit some road debris on 96 heading out of town and damaged my tire beyond what my Stan's Notube sealant could repair. Fortunately Joe had a spare tube and we made an adequate repair and headed back out. Ran down the East Lake road and avoided most of the wind. Spun the long hill from the lake to Willard and up to Ovid where we stopped for some junk food. Pace really started to slow as we continued the mild climb to Logan into the wind. Finally reached the highpoint and started the last twenty miles of mostly downgrade. We lost the wide shoulder as we passed back into Schuyler County and started riding a two man paceline. It got a little competitive which was welcome even though the legs were getting tired. It wasn't a competition to drop the other rider but one of which one would last longer. Stayed in my small chainring and had to spin rapidly to keep up as Joe mashed the bigring on the downhills. We both held on until Watkins and spun out the remaining miles at an easy pace. Not a bad end of season ride overall.
