After sitting in the waiting room for a couple hours, I got up to go use the restroom. As I was returning to my seat, I crossed paths with someone heading towards the restroom who looked familiar. It was a former co-worker, Tom Litton – he left CEPM/SPP just under a year ago. We chatted for a couple minutes, then I mentioned & pointed to where I was sitting, and he said he was sitting in the row ahead of mine. Hmmmm.
A little while later when the group was dismissed for lunch, Tom & I went out to together and did some more catching up. After lunch, as we were sitting back in the waiting room, I was watching other folks file in and noticed one gentleman that looked like another former co-worker, but it had been 8-10 years since he left, so I wasn’t exactly sure it was him. A little more than an hour later, a bailiff came in to call a pool of jurors – the second one of the day. I was the tenth name called, so I said my regards to Tom and went out into the hall to wait for the rest of the group. The other gentleman was also called and came out into the hall. As the group then made our way to the 3rd floor courtroom, I approached this man and confirmed he is Larry Cornelius, formerly a Comptroller at CEPM – he was #15 (first alternate outside of the jury box when were seated in the courtroom).
Judge Goldman, of St Louis County Circuit Court Division 12, started out by introducing the lawyers for the two parties and the plaintiff. The defendant was not present - as it turns out he has passed away recently, not as a result of the incident leading up to this case. As the judge introduced the lawyers, I had to take a close look at the plaintiff's lawyer, Spencer Farris. I know a Spencer Farris. I haven't seen or talked to Spencer in about 20 years. I don't recall him being involved with legal services - I remember his wife was a school teacher and they moved out of the Maryland Heights area to be closer to her school (in the south county area I believe). After the introductions, the judge inquired if anyone of the perspective jurors knows any of these people involved, or anything about this case. I lifted my hand and indicated that I believe I know Mr. Farris - he kind of looked like the Spencer I remember, and how many Spencer Farris’s can there be in the world (in St Louis)? As Mr. Farris talked & asked his questions, including an explanation that he, and alter the defense lawyer, were trying to find out things about us so they select a jury that would provide the best jury to settle their case and it would include such things as discovering any relationships that there may be between all parties in the room. He was sounding more & more like the Spencer I vaguely remember, and as it turns out there is at least a second Spencer Farris - he referenced his two sons being students at a school where Ms Jackson (#6) teaches, Spencer Jr & Mason. Ms Jackson has not had either of the Farris children in her classes.
