 Ride for Mike 2012
Today was Jonathan Pait's Ride for Mike 2012 - lowcadence.com/rideformike/2012.php . I know that there aren't 100 miles in these legs, so I decided to begin the ride from work which is along the route and get out and back. I left work at 8:40 and headed out the route to several miles beyond Woodruff. Everything went smoothly between Grenville and Woodruff. When I left Woodruff on Old Spartanburg Highway I fell in behind a field tractor. I figured that he would get it in a road gear and take off, but he was tootling along at 15 mph. Once he saw me sitting behind him he waved me around. Before I got off Old Spartanburg I had a large dog come out and escort me away from his property. I finally got to the end of the posted route and turned around. Just before getting back to my former escort I met a female cyclist. When I got to the dog his owner was out so he stayed up in their yard. In Woodruff I saw two female cyclists in the McDonald's parking lot. I stopped and asked them if they were doing the Ride for Mike and they were. The McDonalds was the turnaround point and they were waiting for the group to come in so they could do the second half of the ride. I waited with them for about 20 minutes when Annette called and said they were still 16 miles out. At that point I took off as they were over an hour out.

I stopped at a convenience store along 101 and got a Gatorade and a Snickers bar. I met the group after turning off 101. When I was on 101 on the way back I noticed that the wind had picked up. When I turned off of 101I turned straight into the wind. Then I fought the wind the last 20 miles getting back to the truck. At 56 miles my left thigh felt like it had a big knot in it. I would have put in a couple more miles, but that thigh was hurting and I was done.
