Got out of work a little early today and have tomorrow off for a rollover day before I go back to nightshift. Plan on making an attempt to circumvent Lake Okeechobee tomorrow so used today to do a little recon. Plan on going counterclockwise as that looks best given the wind forecast. Last time I went down the west side of the lake I tried to stay on the trail as much as possible but without a map of the system that proved to be difficult. The trail runs atop the Hervert Hoover dike but one must leave the trail to go over some of the locks at several locations and I had some problems getting back on the trail at some places due to right of way issues or in some sections the pavement ends and the trail is surfaced with crushed seashells. The trail is almost always visible from the road as this section of Florida is flat and the dike is the highpoint in the area. The road does veer from the trail in some areas and can be as far as two miles away. I had spent some time on my last trip down here riding a mile or two to the trail on a side road and finding no access or no pavement and had to backtrack back to the main road. While I usually don't mind exploring, the loop is reportedly between a hundred and ten and a hundred and forty miles long depending on detours, so I didn't want to get too many bonus miles in trying dead ends. So had a good ride today checking out the deadends of which I did locate a few. Found no sections of trail paved or usable other than the section between Taylor Creek and Buckhead Ridge that I ride frequently. So it looks like most of my ride down the west side of the lake will be on the road and I will avoid the trail. Forecast for tomorrow looks good with westerly winds starting light but working their was to blustery as the day progresses and temperatures look to be getting above sixty fairly early in the morning which will save me from using leg warmers.
