 Dug-Bronson Climbing
Nice weather has gone south for a bit and today was a pretty raw day. Put on my cold weather gear to fend off the cold temperature and headed into the hills to avoid the cold wind. Only wanted to do a short ride as I got started late in the day after unsuccessfully waiting for it to warm up. Attempted another run on the Dug Road Bronson Hill route with hopes of besting a fifteen mile an hour average. Tried to hit the bottom of Dug Rd hard and did fairly well but lost most of my advantage as I was unable to get any leg speed up on the gentler slopes on the dirt section in the middle of the climb. Saw my speed drop quickly over the last section of the climb and was about a half mile an hour short of where I needed to be. Things picked up a bit across the flattish section to the next climb through Moreland, and I made up a little time. Put some effort into the Moreland climb and got a decent return and did a quick calculation at the top and thought the fifteen goal was still within reach. Hammered the downhill and had a real strong section down SR 414 to the foot of Bronson hill with the help of a stiff tailwind. Spent a good deal out of the saddle up Bronson and spun the slope by the track. Math still looked good as I continued to hammer down into Townsend. Lost a little on the short climbs on the overall descent into Watkins but kept a high speed on the steep down sections. Once into Watkins I needed only to keep my speed above twenty two for the final two flat miles into the headwind. I was a little surprised that I had the legs to keep the tempo up and was rewarded with the coveted fifteen about a quarter mile before the finish. Kind of odd that I'm feeling the best I have all year even in the cold but I'll take it.
