 Rock Stream Attempt
Wasn't to sure about riding today as health appears to be in decline again as felt some fatigue and have a scratchy throat. A strong south wind has kept the temperature well above normal so really thought I should get out before the weather breaks. Planned on trying a fast attempt on the Rock Stream Beaver Dams course as the southern leg of course has some protection from the wind and it provides several opportunities for bailing and coasting back to the house if the legs didn't show up today. Legs didn't seem to be a problem as I caught the tailwind on the flats between Watkins and Montour as the speed was quite high with little effort. Did lose quite a bit of time working my way through the bumper to bumper traffic and seven traffic lights on the main drag through Watkins. Came out at the foot of the hill with a fair average but lower than what I really needed. Did the hill in the big chain ring with a fast cadence but again was a little disappointed with the result as the heavy tailwind should have aided me to a better climb. Held back a little on the next section of rolling flats to Rock Stream as I wanted to save something for the climbing section into the wind. Math looked decent for a good ride as I started the second climb and had a good short climb to the west. Bogged down big time as I turned into the wind at Rock Stream and saw my average speed rapidly fall. After a mile of the climb I stabilized a bit and the speed stopped dropping. Third climb out of Reading Center went better and climb didn't feel nearly as long as hard as it seemed to be last spring. Unfortunately, I couldn't maintain the intensity of the climb over the next flattish section into the headwind. Rallied a little on Mud Lake and went over the top of Sugar Hill with a sixteen one average. Did some quick math and thought I could probably pull off a decent mid eighteens ride but would have to really work into the headwind to Beaver Dams to best my best of nineteen two. Things looked good after the downhill into Townsend and had a good climb on the way out. I even had a good section dead into the wind but think I was sheltered a little by riding along the high corn. Flagged a little on the grade past the Post Office and hit a snag by catching a red light at the construction on SR 414. Since I had to average twenty two plus for the last twenty five miles the short break really hurt. It took me a bit to get back up to speed as I soon had to do a short section into the wind again over the top of Johnson Hollow. Kept a high speed for the remainder of the ride despite the math telling me I wasn't going to get a personal best and finished with an eighteen six. So ended up having a strong ride despite the wind and scratchy throat. Also felt good that I finished strong.
