Another week passes off the bike pretty much ending a dismal September. Had planned on starting a recovery routine with the new month but with cool, wet weather and questionable health today was my first day out. Didn't expect much so headed up the valley into a stiff south wind with the intention of doing the Burch Hill route that has a short climb finishing with a brisk tailwind back down the valley. Got almost to Millport where the road was milled and closed to one lane. Talked to the flagman and she told me it was milled past Pine Valley. Decided to head up Johnson Hollow that would limit riding on the poor surface for a couple of miles. Did the steep section of climb up the base of Johnson Hollow and decided on heading up King Road. Hadn't been up it in several years and then was probably on the mountain bike. It turned out to be a couple of miles long with a couple of steep sections. Reward was panoramic view of the lake valley below. Downhill off the backside was extremely fast but kind of spoiled when the road surface after a mile had been recently oil and stoned. Picked my way back to the Johson Hollow Moreland Rd intersection before descending into Watkins. Had another fast descent aided by the mid-teens tailwind. Had an entertaining ride with some low-key climbing. Didn't expect much with my severely depleted VO2Max level and overall fitness level. Good sunny day ride despite a wicked headwind and a few miles of bad road surface. Felt good to be back on the bike.
